The Silly Symphony series was a collection of 75 animated musical short films produced by Walt Disney Productions between 1929 and 1939. Originally conceived by Walt Disney and composer Carl Stalling as whimsical accompaniments to music, the series became a vital experimental playground for the studio. The series is renowned for pushing the boundaries of animation technology and storytelling: * Technicolor: Flowers and Trees (1932) was the first film to use the three-strip Technicolor process. * Multiplane Camera: The series saw the first use of the multiplane motion picture camera) in The Old Mill (1937), which added a sense of depth to animation. * Character Debuts: While most shorts featured standalone stories, Donald Duck made his first-ever appearance in the 1934 short The Wise Little Hen * Award Success: The series won seven Academy Awards for Best Animated Short Film, including a record-breaking six-year consecutive winning streak. Distribution and Public Domain The series was distributed by various companies over its decade-long run, including Columbia Pictures, United Artists, and RKO Radio Pictures. Recently, the earliest shorts have begun entering the **public domain**, with the first five becoming public in 2025 and an additional ten in 2026.
