Detailed Plot Summary

"The Case of the Cunningham Heritage" serves as the series premiere, blending the iconic first meeting of Holmes and Watson with an original mystery. After returning from the war in Afghanistan, Dr. John Watson is introduced to Sherlock Holmes by their mutual acquaintance, Lord Stamford. The two agree to share rooms at 221B Baker Street.

The plot shifts into a murder investigation when Peter Cunningham is found dead. Inspector Lestrade quickly arrests Peter’s fiancée, Joan, after she is found at the scene holding a bloodied knife. However, Holmes deduces her innocence and turns his suspicion toward Peter's brother, Ralph Cunningham. Through a daring and illegal night-time break-in at the Cunningham estate, Holmes and Watson confront the killer, leading to a physical struggle where Watson’s combat skills prove vital in disarming the culprit.

Series Trivia

  • A Unique Holmes: Unlike the more stern or "irascible" versions of the character, Ronald Howard's Holmes is portrayed as younger, more blithe, and occasionally fallible.
  • A Capable Watson: This series was notable for moving away from the "bumbling" Watson trope; here, he is a sharp, useful companion who often handles the physical confrontations.
  • Filming Secrets: Although set in Victorian London, the series was actually filmed in Paris, France. Stock footage of Big Ben and London Bridge was used to create the atmosphere of the British capital.
  • Historical Context: This was the first American-produced television adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, and it remained the only one until the debut of Elementary in 2012.
