When a hydraulic engineer is offered a massive fee for a secret job in the middle of the night, he quickly realizes he is in over his head. After narrowly escaping a crushing death, he arrives at 221B Baker Street missing a shoe and full of terror.

Sherlock Holmes uses the engineer's physical condition and the mud on his garments to triangulate the location of a criminal gang. This episode is a standout for its pacing and the use of the iconic "hydraulic press" scene that remains a memorable moment in Holmesian history.
